Melrose Area - Water System Transition to Lake Huron Regional Water Supply (April 27, 2026, to end of May 2026)

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS – WATER SUPPLY TRANSITION (MELROSE AREA)

Dear Residents,

The Municipality of Middlesex Centre, in coordination with Birnam Excavating Ltd., is completing upgrades to the Melrose water system. As part of this work, the community will be transitioning from the existing well-based water supply to a treated surface water supply from Lake Huron (Regional Water Supply – RWS). This change will improve long-term water quality and system reliability.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH THE NEW WATER SUPPLY

Once the new water supply is in service, residents may notice the following changes:

  • Improved water clarity and reduced iron staining
  • Lower water hardness
  • Reduced scaling in plumbing fixtures and appliances

Because the Lake Huron supply is significantly softer than the existing well water, some residents may no longer require water softeners or hardness treatment systems. Residents are encouraged to monitor their water quality after the transition and consult a licensed professional before making any changes.

IMPORTANT DATES

Transition to RWS Supply:

  • Tentative Date: April 27, 2026

Kilworth (Crestview Dr.) - Tuesday, March 17, 2026

Temporary Water Shut-off

  • Where: Crestview Drive between Benner Boulevard and Daventry Way in Kilworth
  • When: 9:00 am – 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. While every effort will be made to complete the work on time, it may be necessary to have the water off longer.
  • Reason for Interruption: To complete a water service connection.
  • Impact: We suggested that a short-term water supply be stored before the interruption for use during the shut off. Please see below for further information on Before and After a Water Shut-Off.
  • Notice:  Those that will have their water service turned off will receive a notice delivered to their property.

Before and After a Water Shut Off

If your property is affected by a water shut off:

Before: We suggested that a short-term water supply be stored before the interruption for use during the shut off. While every effort will be made to complete the work on time, it may be necessary to have the water off longer.

After: When the water is turned back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise. If this happens, you can remove the air by briefly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor, and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well.  You should only have to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds, but keep running it until the water is clear and any vibration or noise has stopped.
