Presentations

The council meeting opened with two presentations.

First, Enbridge Gas Inc., the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, and Middlesex Centre Fire Services announced they are once again working together to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero.

Middlesex Centre Fire Services received 210 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Enbridge’s Safe Community Project Zero – a public education campaign that will provide more than 14,200 alarms to residents in 75 communities across Ontario.

These alarms will be distributed by Middlesex Centre Fire Services to residents in the community as they are needed.

Second, Nic Gowing of BM Ross presented Middlesex Centre’s 2025 Bridge Needs Study. The presentation highlighted the findings of the report, which focused on rating the condition of bridges and culverts located throughout the municipality.

Overall, the bridges in Middlesex Centre are in fair to good condition, with 22 structures recommended for replacement over the next 10 years. The findings will be incorporated into the municipality’s asset management plan.

Council Business

During the meeting, Council:

  • Received a report regarding tax adjustments for 2025 and approved the write-off of $9,934 in taxes. Of this amount, $5,267 is Middlesex Centre’s portion, with the remainder being assumed by Middlesex County and the school boards (the municipality collected taxes on their behalf).
  • Approved a by-law to bring portions of Official Plan Amendment 59 (OPA 59) into force, specifically to support ongoing Housing Accelerator Fund initiatives. These include policies for additional residential units and the municipality’s community improvement plan, and delegated authority for additional planning approvals to the Committee of Adjustment. Other portions of OPA 59 remain under appeal and before the Ontario Land Tribunal.
  • Approved the interim tax levy and temporary borrowing by-laws for 2026.
