Fire Safety Tips for Halloween

Halloween is a fun and festive time. It's also a great opportunity to check in on fire safety at home.

Here are a few simple ways to keep your celebrations safe:

  • Costumes - Choose flame-resistant costumes and avoid long, trailing fabrics that could brush against candles or heaters. Opt for face paint instead of masks to keep vision clear. (Be sure to test for skin sensitivities.)

  • Decorations - Use battery-operated candles for jack-o’-lanterns and displays. Real flames can tip over and ignite nearby materials.

  • Outdoor Lighting - Use CSA-approved lights and extension cords for outdoor displays. Never run cords under rugs or across walkways. Inspect for fraying before plugging in.

  • Smoke Alarms & Escape Plan - It's always a good time to test your smoke alarms and review your home escape plan. Remember, there should be a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Practice your family's escape plan, identifying two ways out of each room and a safe meeting spot outside.

A few small steps can help ensure a safe and spooky Halloween for everyone!
